According to the news report by Bloomberg, Toyota Motor Corp.’s new Supra 2020 was unveiled at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday.
This is the first time in 17 years that Toyota has brought back a vintage sports car like the Supra in the US. However, unlike its predecessor, the new Supra’s engineering, chassis and engine are the same as the BMW Z4 coupe.
The timing of this new-old sports car’s launch is key. The US car market is focused increasingly on SUVs and pickup trucks and sedan sales have slowed down massively. At this time, besides Ford Motor Co.’s Shelby GT500, the Toyota’s Supra is the only other sports car of note that debuted at Detroit.
HIS Markit’s lead auto analyst, Stephanie Brinley states that the auto show in Detroit reflects changing consumer tastes. She says that while there will always be a niche market for fun driving cars like sports cars, consumers are more drawn to utility vehicles now.
Having said that, Toyota still choose the perfect time to re-launch the Supra. Other iconic brands from the 1990s such as the Nissan GT-R, the Acura NSX and the Porsche 928 are making a comeback as vintage collectibles for millennials.
CNN gives a little history about the car. The name of this little sports car was actually originally the classification of a special high-performance model of the Toyota Cecelia in the 1970s; it was called the Cecelia Supra. However, later, the Japanese car maker launched a totally new sports car with the name Supra, which gave drivers an even higher level of performance than the Cecelia Supra.
Of all the generations of the Supra, the 1990s model of the sports car is the most popular today. In fact, a 1990s model of the car which had clocked just 7,000 miles sold for $121,000. Another 1994 model sold for $80,500.
The reason why the Supra was such a popular car at the time was because besides being a high-performance car, it could also take modifications well. People could use performance tuners to modify its 6-cylinder engine to give massive amounts of horsepower. And when the Supra was featured in one of the Fast and Furious movies, millennials also fell in love with it.
The modern version of the Supra is equipped with modern technology such as auto-dimming mirrors, LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers and rearview cameras. It also has a computer screen display (6.5-inch or 8-inch), optional adaptive cruise control and automatic climate control.
This car is perfect for people who want to use it as a daily drive. The Supra is also perfect for the race track since it is extremely light at 3397 pounds and has rear-wheel propulsion for high speeds. Both the Sport as well as the Normal driving modes come as standard in car.
According to Toyota’s head of marketing Jack Hollis, customers are going to love the new version of the Supra just as much as they did the older models. He says that the aftermarket has gone crazy for this sports car.
While the Supra has stolen the spotlight at the Detroit auto show, not everyone is thrilled about this tiny little sports car. The executive editor for Autotrader Brian Moody feels like people have too many expectations of the car. He says that while the Supra is a good performance car that people can enjoy, its debut is building towards something that Toyota cannot deliver on – nostalgia.
Whatever be the case, the Supra 2020 is due to go on sale this summer and has a starting price of $49,999.
