The most anticipated event of the year for Apple lovers was here – the new iPhone launches. On September 12, Apple launched its latest products at an event at their new California headquarters. The products that were launched were the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, the Apple Watch Series 3 and the Apple TV 4K. The stars of the show were obviously the 10th anniversary special – the iPhone X.
The iPhone X
Apple CEO Tim Cook called the iPhone X the future of smartphones. And here’s what it has. It comes with the latest OLED edge-to-edge screen and no home button. According to the new phone developers, not having a home button actually makes navigation easier; you simply tap the screen to activate it and swipe up to go to the home screen. It is dust as well as water resistant and has a battery life that is supposed to be 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7. Retina display, dual cameras and wireless charging are also there. What’s also new is the 3D Face ID. The biometric tool learns a user’s face a little more every time the user looks at the phone. It can even detect the user’s face in the dark. There will be two versions – 64GB and 256GB. And it comes in two colours – space gray or silver.
The iPhone X’s price starts at $999. Apple will start taking orders from October 27, and the first phones will be shipped out on November 3.
The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus
The two new phones have non-LED screens. However, the glass screens are supposed to the most durable ever to be used on a smart phone. Both the models are water and dust resistant. The audio systems have been upgraded and the iPhone 8 models are now 25% louder than the iPhone 7. The new A11 chip that powers these phones is projected as the smartest and most powerful to be used in smartphones. The phones’ cameras have also been upgraded vis-à-vis the iPhone 7. Again, the regular features include retina display, dual cameras and built in 3D touch. There will be two models for each phone – 64GB and 256GB. The phones are available in 3 colors – silver, gold and space gray.
The iPhone 8 costs $699 and the larger iPhone 8 Plus is for $799. Orders will start from September 17, and shipping will start by September 22.
Apple (AAPL) stocks slipped after the unveiling as fans and investors alike were disappointed about the delayed release date of the iPhone X. Apple sales typically boom immediately after the release of a new iPhone, however, this time, analysts are expecting revenues in this quarter to be on the low side thanks to the delay. Shares had gone up by almost 1% at the start of the event, but fell after the release dates were announced. Thanks to a leak on Friday, the only surprise at the event was the release dates of the iPhone X. Shares finally closed 0.4% lower at $160.91.
Analysts are expecting a two-fold ding on sales. iPhone enthusiasts will want to wait for the iPhone X to compare it to the cheaper iPhone 8 before making a purchase. That means September sales will be weak for both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. So, the 3rd Quarter is now expected to yield fewer results. Analysts are expecting the 4th Quarter to have a huge jump in sales though, and are predicting that share prices could go up to as much as $180 – $208 in the final quarter.
