According to Bloomberg, Apple Inc. is expanding its iPhone line up by launching three new models this September. According to people in the know, all the three new models of the iPhone are going to retain the edge-to-edge screen design of the iPhone X.
These three new phones will also have a wider range of sizes, features and prices to appeal to a wider audience, according to the sources. These sources, however, asked not to be identified as this matter is still under wraps.
While all three phones will have some of the features of the iPhone X, none of them will be completely new designs like the company’s flagship model last year, or even the iPhone 6 when it was launched in 2014.
People within Apple have actually dubbed this year’s launch the “S year”. This is the name that Apple has given new models of iPhones that carry the old designs and only have been given a few new features. The company is, however, planning some significant changes for 2019, according to these internal sources.
The iPhone X has not been as successful in the market as the tech giant hoped its flagship phone would be. And while it may not have swept through the markets the way the iPhone 6 did, it has sold strongly since its launch last November and has even helped the company to gain market share in a smartphone market that is almost at a standstill in terms of growth.
With the new phones Apple is planning a change in its strategy. Rather than focusing on bringing in new users, the company is now looking at slowly and steadily raising average prices. Concurrently, the company is looking at expanding its range of accessories as well as digital services like music and video stream. Added to this, Apple is expanding its suite of devices (such as the new Apple Home, the Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Music, etc.)
According to a veteran Apple analyst, the managing partner of Loup Ventures Gene Munster, the iPhone is now entering a period of 0% – 5% yearly growth and what the company does now will keep that growth up. The real attraction still remains the iPhone since it is the hub that connects all the peripheral devices together.
According to internal sources, of the 3 new iPhones, one will be a high end device which has been dubbed D33. It is going to have a display that measures 6.5” diagonally, making it the largest iPhone to date and one of the largest smartphones from a major manufacturer in the market.
The second phone, internally called the D32, will be an upgrade on the current iPhone X, with a 5.8” OLED screen and will have higher processing speeds as well as a better camera.
The most significant of the three, however, will be the third one, called the N84. This is going to be a cheaper device to replace the current iPhone 8. It will look like the iPhone X but with a bigger 6.1” display, will come in various colors and will have aluminum edges instead of the stainless steel cover that the iPhone X has. The screen will also be the less expensive LCD rather than the iPhone X’s OLED.
In the early part of 2016, Apple had reported that it had reached a milestone of 1 billion active iPhones. And in early 2018, that number had grown to 1.3 billion. Now, with the introduction of these 3 new iPhones, the company is hoping to push that number higher.
Apple shares gained less than 1% to trade at $217.24 per share.
